Template Use of Face Shields

This template provides information on the correct use of face shields. Please adjust it based on your unique business needs.

Please note:

UK government guidance on face shields to date has been that if you are working in health or social care settings, you may need to wear a face shield at some times for eye protection. UK government advice does not recommend face shields in other settings at this time https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/coronavirus-covid-19-personal-protective-equipment-ppe

Scottish government guidance is that Face shields may be used, but only if they are worn in addition to a face covering underneath, as the evidence shows that they do not provide adequate protection. If you are unable to wear a face covering, a face visor or face shield can be worn as it does provide a limited level of protection.https://www.gov.scot/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-phase-3-staying-safe-and-protecting-others/pages/face-coverings/

Research made public on the 22nd September from Japan indicates that face shields may be "ineffective at trapping respiratory aerosols" https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/sep/22/face-shields-ineffective-trapping-aerosols-japanese-supercomputer-coronavirus. We are awaiting further government guidance on this issue

Please note, updated government guidance dated 26th November states that “A face visor or shield may be worn in addition to a face covering but not instead of one. This is because face visors or shields do not adequately cover the nose and mouth.” https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/face-coverings-when-to-wear-one-and-how-to-make-your-own/face-coverings-when-to-wear-one-and-how-to-make-your-own
